So, for the book group I am in we read, "If I did It" this month. For all those who have been living under a rock, I will catch you up to speed. This book is a hypothetical, "If I did it, this is how I would have," not a confessional. Though anyone would agree after reading this book that it reads much more like the pages of a diary. Here is a little history on how this book came to be for all those wondering: Simpson goes into detail about his life and his love with Nicole Brown Simpson. Dr. Phil about a month ago had the Goldmans' on his show, and they talked about their victory in getting this book published. At first, one would think it weird to want to publish the murders' "how to" for the world to see. Almost like he was rubbing his arrogance in the publics' face. So why would the goldman's be in a such a project? 13 years ago, when Simpson was acquitted of the charges, he was ordered to pay the Goldmans a 38 million dollar fine. But than soon after, Simpson decided to move to Florida, which is a debtor-friendly state and the Goldmans' didn't see a dime. He decided to get with a publishing company to publish this book, whether to clear his conscience or to make money in exploiting the situation- no one really knows. The attorneys got involved, and the Goldmans' soon found out about this book and were sick about it. When OJ had refused to pay the 38 million dollar fine, the Goldmans' slapped a lien against him and his assets, which says any money that OJ makes until the fine is paid in full the Goldmans' will get. OJ created a company called Lorraine Brooke that he set up so his children were 25% owners of, and any money OJ made would be paid to this company, but because of a legality would go to OJ. So, when the Goldmans' put a halt on the publication of this manuscript, Lorraine Brooke claimed bankrupt, totally knocking any claims against Simpson off his record. So, when they settled in court, the judge decided in order of clearing up the debt with the Goldmans', the new manuscript would be turned over to the Goldmans' and any profits would be theirs. They decided to go through with the publishing of the book (though the publisher refused to pull the few copies he had made off the shelf), after reading it they decided he basically admitted it the double murders and their brother and son would not have died in vain.
I was nervous about reading this book because I didn't want to hear all the gory details. But it was very clean, surprisingly, for a murder book. The language, really, was the worst part. It was written as a thriller and very entertaining. It's only like 200 pages long and I read it in two days, I couldn't put it down!
